Hosted Manila™ Content Management

Build Websites and Weblogs using centralised, server based content management using Manila™, hosted by Spiderlines.

Build public or password protected websites for businesses, non-profit groups, educational institutions or individuals.

Work with other team members in different locations to build and add to websites or weblogs.

Read more about the editorial rights system.

Manila is Content Management Software

Manila™, by Userland, is a powerful web site management application that offers many advantages over traditional web site management approaches:

    • All the tools you need are built into every page of your site. Login to your site with your user name and password from any internet connected computer with a browser. No software to install, the software is built into your site.

    • Little to no knowledge of HTML is needed to perform basic updating tasks.

    • You may add additional editors to your site that would be permitted to input new stories and pictures, but not be permitted to alter the home page or look of your site.

    • Upload digital photos and other images, and place them on any page of your site simply.

    • Offer membership to your site, and invite members to participate in a discussion group built in to your site. Exchange ideas, links and other information on projects and other topics of common interest to your audience.

    • Build in your site content first. This is key. Start building your site with the information you need to communicate now, alter and enhance the look later. We keep your words separate from your template. This means you can edit your template and upgrade the look of all of your pages at once. This saves you time and makes it easy to improve your site over the long term.

    Why All of This Matters
Running a useful, successful web site means keeping it up to date. Manila reduces the number of steps needed to update your site to two, as easy as sending a request for a change to your web site to your over burdened web guru, who may get it done in a week or so...

With this system, you may update your site any time, from any browser on any internet connected computer. This is less expensive, and you get your changes instantly, when you need them.

    Manila is Developed by Userland

Spiderlines licenses Frontier and Manila from Userland. We maintain and host our client's web sites on our own hardware, using Frontier and Manila. Read more about Manila at Userland's Manila Web site.

A MASSIVE well done to the members of the Pelsall Village School girls 6-a-side football team. They are winners of the Walsall SFA U-11 6-a-side tournament (probably the last one to be held after the organiser endured extreme aggravation before, during and after the event) and are now due to represent Walsall in the West Midlands County final along with Christchurch School on Saturday 17th March 2007 held at The Dell Stadium, Bryce Road, Pensnett, Brierley Hill. The Benefits of This System

Take the pain out of self publishing and/or promotion

Easily add pages, pictures, thumbnails and items to your website. No need to know HTML or FTP. So effortless everybody should be doing it.

Ask some of the customers who have been with us for the last year just how simple it actually is. Many of the underlying features just work quietly in the background making your site far more professional and powerful than many large sites on the net. The rich feature set is based upon years of experience and designed to allow non-technical people to publish content to their intranet, corporate, department, or individual website.

It is as simple or as deep as you want it to be. From day one, you'll be posting items in seconds of starting your site. Over time your site can grow into a sophisticated, high-traffic community with power tools that have been designed and used with you in mind.

It is for beginning users that want to have a web page, but don't want to learn too many details. It's also for advanced web users that don't want to worry about all the details, even if they are capable of doing so. It lowers the threshold of pain for running a frequently updated site to zero decreasing the chances of it becoming deadwood like so many other sites out there.

No software to download

Update and control your site from any web enabled computer, even from your mobile phone. The dynamic system means you see exactly what you post straight away.

You'll appreciate being able to update your site from any country, from any office, from any PC just log in and you're away.

You'll also be able to let other workers, friends or family edit or add or contribute to your site, even allowing (or not) others to comment on your items. Your site can become the hub of your own digital community, with you in complete or shared control. Some people even allow complete strangers to post to their site, others do it in complete privacy, only allowing themselves or invited members to view the pages.

No HTML? Is that good or bad?

It's good, because you can still write HTML in your posts, or even use a WYSIWYG editor (what you see is what you get) in the browser. This allows you to add tables, bold text, colours and so on, and allows you to edit that HTML in raw form. See? I told you we were flexible.

And to add links or images to your posts use shortcuts, which will save you plenty of time and worry. Simply surround a shortcut with "quotes" and it will be replaced with a link, picture or thumbnail.

Your templates are also editable, if you know some HTML. If you're hot with HTML and web design you can even create a completely different look, or theme. Don't worry if you're not, there's plenty of existing themes available.

Create, review and edit again and again

As owner you can do this anywhere, to anybody's postings, while only those who post a message, page, picture or item can edit their own.

Total ownership means you posted it, you can edit it. No more wading through complex HTML just to correct spelling, only the text you post is shown to you for editing. Like we say, it's as easy as it should be, which is why I'm still using it after all these years and why hundreds of thousands of other are too.

Fully loaded features make your jaw drop

There are so many features you'll have fun switching them on and off and discovering new ones.

Each post is added to your RSS feed, you don't even have to know what that is, but you'll learn to love your own inbuilt aggregator. Now, you'll be able to read hundreds of websites, weblogs and other news feeds hyper efficiently. Subscribing to another feed is as easy as clicking on a link.

This has been developed for years, so there's very little in the way of features that you'll not find. But remember, a lot more work went into making these features dead simple, yet powerful, ever so powerful.

Archives are stable for search engine crawlers and deep linkers will appreciate the permalink URLs meaning these sites will last you a lifetime.

Highly flexible - completely customisable

Want your own URL? Need to change all instances of a name in your entire site? Need to write in Danish, Dutch, German, French or Italian? Change your time zone? Add a blogroll or export your RSS subscriptions?

By changing the settings you can completely change the look or function of your site. You can add CSS and JavaScript behaviour. Come up with any design you like, and odds are you can pull it off.

Not interested in a news site, but you want to build a site for one specific purpose, like a product manual? You can do that too. Just disable the calendar and discussion group in the configuration pages.

Loads of documentation and help files

There's a Manila newbies mailing list as well as a downloadable pdf (3.5megs) which has all the how tos you need. You can use this as a training manual.

There's also a load of macros that you can add to your posts or templates which will give you fantastic funtionality. And of course we can help you with them.

Yours to download and own. No lock-in

I'd hate that! To be stuck with a technology or provider. Which is why you can download your site and move away if we don't live up to your expectations.

Or, maybe export your site to import into something else. Exporting your back posts to RSS is a doddle and quite useful for other things.

No complicated web hosting

Everything is ready for you to go. We host your site, provide you with easy and very useful daily stats, like referers so you can see who's sending traffic to your site and traffic, so you can see on an hourly basis how many hits you're getting, and even compare your site to others here.

Everything is thought of and taken care of.

How can this system actually be used by schools?

Courtesy of Userland:

There are a number of ways that this technology is used by academic institutions. Here are some examples:

Distance Learning

The system must be capable of supporting a large number of users, but also be simple and intuitive for students and faculty to use. It must also be highly flexible to meet a growing list of requirements. This system allows you to support a network of thousands of websites. Membership features make it easy for faculty members to maintain a list of their students and send the occasional email bulletin or newsletter. Students can be added in bulk or individually. Peer review can take place before the work is made available to the larger community or the content can be remain private. Threaded Discussion Forums are supported and facilitate the interchange of ideas. Because RSS is built-in, every single site can have its own RSS feed and list of subscriptions specific to the activities on that site. What a great way to keep up with current events or the work going on in other departments.

Writing Workshops

This system is uniquely suited to facilitating writing workshops. For example, a "story" can serve as the assignment page. Students can receive the assignment either in an email with a link or through RSS. Documents and other existing instructional material can be made available as well that are specific to the assignment. Discussion can take place in the discussion forum to help students explore and better understand the assignment. The instructor can field questions and point students with the same questions to relevant posts. Drafts can be reviewed by the instructor prior to release to the class. Students can then be allowed to comment on each others work. Comment moderation by the instructor ensures this exchange remains constructive. Additionally, a plug-in is available that will place two different languages side-by-side for multi-lingual writing assignments. As the instructor, you are only limited by your imagination.

Alumni Outreach

There is no better way to stay in touch with alumni than blogs with RSS. Post news and events to this type of site, host a directory of faculty and alumni, conduct surveys, or better yet, allow the alumni to remain in touch with each other by providing this type of forum for their use. Use membership forms to keep alumni contact information current and allow past students to remain in touch with favorite professors by subscribing to their blogs. These kinds of activities will keep the alumni community current and interested in their alma mater. Visit Weblogs at Harvard Law, hosted by the Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard Law School.

School News and Events

The world has come to recognize the web as the best way to publish information on current activities and events. Check out Rock Island School District's news site. This system makes it simple. Use our Calendar Plug-In to publish information on future events and then link to the specifics on another page. Allow people to sign up for the events and send them a bulletin prior to the event. Then follow up the events by posting news items to the site - pictures or a podcast. If your readers use iCal on the Mac or Outlook in MS Windows, they can subscribe to a site's calendar and be updated when new items are posted.

Professor Blogs

Here's an example of what Dr. Robert Borofsky is doing with this system in the area of public anthropology. This is a collection of private sites, each set up to support Instructors and students using Dr. Borofsky's book, "Yanomami: The Fierce Controversy and What We Can Learn From It". Each school gets its own private site that is created using a custom theme. This theme includes several pages with questions and other information. Students log in and post answers to assigned questions in the Discussion Group. this system is flexible and can easily be adapted to a variety of uses, including automatically subscribing students to receive email notification when someone posts a comment on their answer. Students reportedly enjoy reading and commenting on each other's answers. They claimed that it enhanced the experience and that they learned more than they would have otherwise. You can visit the site by clicking here.

Faculty Directory and Faculty Sites

This system's feature set makes it a great choice for the faculty directory. The ability to easily create a separate website for each faculty member makes the directory come alive. As a result of the Edit This Page functionality, the directory is constantly being updated by the people most interested in keeping it current - the faculty member. It also adds a personal touch allowing them to place relevant content were it can be found most quickly by students, administrators, alumni, and other faculty members. The De Anza Faculty Directory for De Anza College in Cupertino, California uses this system for most faculty sites and it's a great example of how it works in this role.

Posts galore

Yet another update from www.claretandbluewedding.com. This time concerning the intended ceremony. I wonder if they'll be able to squeeze in my favourite hymn:

Make me a channel of your peace,
Where there is hatred, let me bring Your love,
Where there is injury, Your pardon Lord,
And where there's doubt, true faith in You

Make me a channel of your peace,
Where there's despair in life let me bring hope,
Where there is darkness - only light,
And where there's sadness, ever joy

Oh Master, grant that I may never seek,
So much to be consoled as to console,
To be understood, as to understand,
To be loved, as to love with all my soul

Make me a channel of your peace,
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
In giving to all men that we recieve,
And in dying that we're born to eternal life

True love

Reasons behind the choice of date and thoughts required on the wedding rings from my latest clients. You're taking to it like a fish to water! It's even impressed Bad English, of H&V notoriety! Just joking, Darren.

The future's bright. The future's Claret and Blue!

A big welcome to my latest client, Ian Bourne, of H&V fame. www.claretandbluewedding.com intends to document the lead-up to the wedding of the year, which is taking place exactly 25 years to the day since the greatest football team in the world won the European Cup. Hope I get an invite!!

Podcasting

Are you ready to start Podcasting? This system makes it simple with out of the box file systems and RSS subscription services. This is a simple how-to, to get you started Podcasting.

Configuring the Enclosures feature

1. Go to your site's News Items Prefs page, scroll down to the Enclosures section, and click Yes to Enable the Enclosures feature.

2. Choose Upload a File next to the question, How do you want to add Enclosures. This will allow you to upload your Podcast when you create your news item. (You can also use a Shortcut or URL, if you prefer to upload your Podcasts to another location.)

3. For your Podcasts to be linked on your home page, customize the News Item Template by adding Enclosure macros. There are macros for including the name, url, size and an icon for enclosures. (See this page for a list of specific macros.)

4. Click the Submit button at the bottom of the page.

Your site is now set up for Podcasting.

Creating your first Podcast

1. Use your favorite MP3 recording software to create a file for your first Podcast, and save it to your hard disk.

2. Create a new news item by clicking the News link in Manila's Editors Only menu, and then clicking the Create a News Item link. Type a title and some text for the description.

3. Click the Choose File button next to Enclosure, and pick the MP3 file you just recorded. Then click the Post button:

4. Click Post to Home Page.

You're now a Podcaster!

People who subscribe to your site's RSS feed will see your Podcast as an RSS enclosure, and if their software supports it, the file will be automatically downloaded to their MP3 player.

Notes

The enclosures feature, which is central to Podcasting, is part of Manila's News Items feature. Your site must be a news items site in order to use Manila for Podcasting.

Another Perspective

What is a Weblog?

A weblog is, most commonly, a website containing the author's frequently updated impressions, analysis and comments on news, events or other topics of interest. Each entry in a weblog is known as a 'post' and these are usually organised in reverse chronological order with the most recent post at the top of the page. Weblog posts are generally short and informal, much like email, but because blog posts are intended for a broader audience, they are written in a more conversational tone and frequently serve to invite others to a discussion on the particular point of the post. Such conversation is commonly enabled by spam-free email and commenting tools incorporated into the weblog application. Comments and emails are often rapidly incorporated back into the site's content, creating a nearly real-time communication channel between the blog's author and his or her readers.

Whether a form of journalism, collaboration or education, what makes weblogs so powerful is their use of the Internet to publish and spread the message of the author. It has long been recognized that the Internet is the largest and most powerful printing press ever known. What weblogs have done is make this printing press available to anyone who has a web connection and the desire to share his or her thoughts with others. Weblogs have been with us for as long as there has been a world wide web, but in the last two years, the number of weblog authors has increased from a few thousand to several million.

Weblogs are poised to change the way enterprises use the internet to communicate. The primary advantage of weblogs over traditional content management systems is clear: usability. From English professors to architects, thousands of non-technical users are using them to share ideas, manage projects, and build deeper relationships with colleagues - all without the intervention of IT staffers. They can be made an essential part of business processes.

Uses of Weblogs

Individuals/Families -- keep connected with your loved ones. This system makes it SO easy for you to keep people informed, updated and engaged as to your activities, thoughts, dreams, wishes and desires. You can use it as a daily diary, or as an on-line 'scrapbook'. Let your friends, your family, your local community, even the world know what you're doing on a day-by-day basis.

Academic Communities -- a powerful educational tool at any curriculum level. Create a website for your school or academic institution, every class, even every child. Students will be able to help each other and the educators can monitor the site to keep communications on track. Your institution can build a community without draining time or valuable resources away from technology administrators.

Manufacturing -- connects manufacturing facilities with design and sales departments, giving key stakeholders insight into how fluctuations in manufacturing capacity and demand impact them. It can also be used to connect decision-makers at different facilities. For instance, plant managers at a major auto manufacturer can use a site to post issues, troubleshoot problems, and hold discussions.

e-Business Portal -- links internal teams with external partners, keeping them informed about product developments, new products, and opportunities. For instance, a major electronics manufacturer can keep its sales partners and distributors up to date about its offerings and sales strategies.

Software Development -- Engineering teams track tasks and resolve problems, eliminating countless emails while keeping everyone on the same page. RSS feeds help large project teams stay informed because members can subscribe to the project updates that affect them the most.

Collaboration and Communication -- sharing information, exchanging ideas, and troubleshooting challenges is easy for everyone at every level of the organization. For instance, your top customer service agents can share insights on an internal customer service weblog, helping to boost overall service to customers. Or you can bridge communication gaps between business units by creating an enterprise-wide weblog.

Product Catalogues -- when you maintain your product catalogue, product managers and other stakeholders have the power to edit the pages they control and publish updates. Simply make a page for each product or product group and assign control to the appropriate people in your organization.

Intranet Portal -- numerous organizations create and link internal websites. And, no matter how global your organization, you can keep everyone up-to-date on important news by creating a daily news page that aggregates information from key weblogs in your portal.

Project Management -- Improve organization and accountability by using managing projects. When you initiate a new project, start a new site and establish a hierarchy of users. The site becomes the hub for all information exchange related to the project, such as schedules, documentation, brainstorming, and posting deliverables. If any one is holding up the project by failing to meet deadlines, you'll know and be able to take corrective action immediately.

What is a 'Blog'?

WHAT IS A BLOG?

A blog is a personal diary. A daily pulpit. A collaborative space. A political soapbox. A breaking-news outlet. A collection of links. Your own private thoughts. Memos to the world.

Your blog is whatever you want it to be. There are millions of them, in all shapes and sizes, and there are no real rules.

In simple terms, a blog is a web site, where you write stuff on an ongoing basis. New stuff shows up at the top, so your visitors can read what's new. Then they comment on it or link to it or email you. Or not.

Blogs have reshaped the web, impacted politics, shaken up journalism, and enabled millions of people to have a voice and connect with others.

The whole deal is just getting started.

PUBLISH YOUR THOUGHTS

A blog gives you your own voice on the web. It is a place to collect and share things that you find interesting— whether it is your political commentary, a personal diary, or links to web sites you want to remember.

Many people use a blog just to organise their own thoughts, while others command influential, worldwide audiences of thousands. Professional and amateur journalists use blogs to publish breaking news, while personal journalers reveal inner thoughts.

Whatever you have to say, Spiderlines can help you say it.

GET FEEDBACK

The blogging experience is about not only putting your thoughts on the web, but hearing back from and connecting with other like-minded folks.

Comments let readers of your site from all over the world give feedback on what you share on your blog. You can choose whether or not you want to allow comments on a post-by-post basis (and you can delete anything you do not like).

Blogs can be excellent communication tools for small teams, families, or other groups. Give your group its own space on the web for sharing news, links, and ideas.

Blogs let you find people and other blogs that share your interests which you might enjoy.

POST PHOTOS

Sometimes you just want to share a photo. There is a facility for uploading photos in the interface. Just click the button to upload a photo from your computer. If the photo you would like to put on your blog is already on the web that is fine too.

You can also send camera phone photos straight to your blog while you're on-the-go.

GO MOBILE

Mail-to-Weblog lets you send photos and text straight to your blog while you are on-the-go. All you need to do is send a message from your phone or E-Mail application.

There is even a feature, called Podcasting, that can post items to your site as an MP3 audio file. (It's fun at parties.)

GET STARTED WITH SPIDERLINES

The fastest way to understand blogging is to try it out. It’s really easy. Just contact me, and you can be part of the phenomenon that is transforming web and media to a participatory activity in less than five minutes. Seriously.

What will happen then? Who knows. It might be fun, though.

And remember, if you have trouble, just contact me, and you can find the answer that you are looking for.

An apology to SERCO

Firstly, I would like to apologise for ANY embarrassment or inconvenience that the latest global E-Mail has caused. The subject matter regarding 'SERCO Sucks' was meant to be light-hearted and nothing else.

Secondly, I accept full responsibility for using future customers school names without permission. This was an unacceptable oversight on my part and I hold my hands up to my mistake. I wish to place on record that I have NOT used the internal E-Mail system and never have. I paid £1000 last year for a list of ALL E-Mail addresses of schools in the UK.

Thirdly, the package offered by me was never meant to replace the SERCO system for any school (even though it could if wished), merely to supplement it and run alongside it, enhancing the curriculum for the benefit of the childrens ICT education. It is independent of SERCOs Teknical service. There is no other system that is as 'child-friendly' as this. All children at your school could be ground-breakers. It would be detrimental to the provision of quality ICT skills for the children of your school if this has put people off and I urge anyone that has been to reconsider.

Again, fullest, sincerest apologies are tendered.

As a gesture of goodwill, any school in Walsall signing up to this package before December 31st 2006 will be given a 25% discount.

SERCO or Spiderlines?

Education Walsall have an off-shoot 'Teknical' web-site package for schools in Walsall LEA. All well and good. Let's have a look....Far too 'technical'!! Bugs galore. Inability to log-in without closing the browser first.  Complex interface. Hideously long URLs. Technical nightmare. User UN-friendly. Dull layout. Limited functionality. Unbelievably EXPENSIVE!

This system is FAR easier to implement and is extremely user-friendly (as well as being cost-effective).

It is so easy that even 7 year old children can do it. If you are able to move a mouse, click a few buttons and string a few sentences together you can maintain a cutting edge site. Add text and images with ease:

test:

There is no need for ANY technical knowledge at all. FTP? HTML? What does that mean? Who cares? It's not necessary. With this system, you do not need it, but I can explain and define the terms if you really want me to.

You'll get all the training you require; support in person, on the telephone or via E-Mail, all to make sure you get the very best out of your investment.

If you are even remotely interested, please contact me for a FREE 20 minute no-obligation demonstration of the power, ease and manageability of this system, either in person, over the telephone or via E-Mail. Simplicity itself. Guaranteed!

PERFECT for engaging your school community in a safe, structured environment.
